hey, so I just wanted to give a early head's up to you forum rats about a new vBlog up now at youtube. writing another mopey song that probably won't be on the record but which I really, really like.

do you guys like mopey songs? seems like the older I get the more mope I listen to.

anyway... I'll try to continue my habit of announcing stuff first HERE before tweeting, blogging, facebooking, emailing, jacking and generally wanking it out via the rest of the godforsaken formats we all seem to be beholden to now. thank god for Tiia for doing all that shit. (three cheers for Tiia, queen of the new regime!)

so here it is:

hope you enjoy!

(and thanks for all your love & support!)

I like the sound a lot, and mopey can be great. To me what separates a great album from a good album is the story arch. For instance take YBAM, it started off with songs like Xray and Time Ago with the innocence of love, and moved through progressive branches that love takes with Can't Keep the Rain or instead Ten Million Years. It all was tied together with the heartfelt mopey end of Gates of the Country.
I don't know, it all dawned on me today about what truly makes an album appealing. You contrast YBAM with the Give Us Sugar compilation, which contains all the singles that kept us fans going through the year, and that's what makes it stand apart in my eyes. Both are great cause the songs are amazing, but YBAM still has the story arch. Maybe I'm just losing it a little, though I like 4:05 so far.

I do, however, want to point something out that I'm sure you'll catch Paul... I debated whether or not to say anything or not but I figure you say you want our feedback so here goes: From what I noticed of the lyrics it goes something like this:

There's a train that leaves at 4:05
If you want me I'll be on it.
It's the 8th of May, I feel alright-
I know I'll move beyond it...
Somewhere on the ride.

Just don't want you to pull a Limp Bizkit stunt and rhyme "it" with.... "it" haha. I know its a work in progress, but thanks for letting us in. :)

hey Raich, thx for your post.

I, too, stress and strain over the narrative arc of this shit. I tell you, narrative arc don't come easy. so I'm wanting to make it happen while at the same time use less words. I think if I could write a song with one word that would be perfect. unfortunately, stories take words. grrrr...

meanwhile, it's important to note that the rhyme is not "it" with "it," but "on in" with "-ond it," a (weaker) two syllable rhyme instead of a (stronger) one syllable rhyme. in fact, it's actually a three syllable rhyme ("be on it" with "beyond it"), and the problem is not the "it" (it's perfectly legal to make two and three syllable rhymes), but the fact that the "d" in "beyond" is so soft that in functional terms I'm rhyming "be on it" with "be on it," which is a much greater crime than just rhyming "it" with "it."

this, I'm sure, is what your struck your ear as odd. I'm usually very fastidious about following these rules but somehow, in this case, I like the way the bad technique weakens the rhyme, dropping us off a cliff into the "somewhere on the ride." not sure why. not sure if it matters or if I'm just a tweaker. not sure if this mopey nonsense is even going to be on the record. not sure if this paragraph will ever end.

...whew, that was close.

anyway -- thanks!
paul
