Blacklabworld is happy to feature See Red, the debut solo album by Kristin Kelly. you might know Kristin’s work from Cake or Death — she was Paul’s co-singer & -writer on many of those songs. now after years hunkered over her acoustic guitar, she’s back with a superb set of songs produced by Deej Hofer & Paul Bohak of Stray Palace. Paul liked the roughs so much he offered to produce (and sing on) the background vocals, so his touch is here as well.
here is Paul’s review of the album: with See Red, Kristin Kelly arrives — a fully-formed artist in complete command of what she wants to say and how she says it. with collaborators Deej Hofer & Paul Bohak, she paints a parallel world of sound and story, invites us in and makes it easy to enjoy the ride. like the best pop albums, this one is chock full of melodies that get lodged in your head, the kind you wouldn’t want to get rid of even if you could. a warm wash of electronics surround Kelly like a pink cloud, allowing her sweet, sometimes sharp voice to relax. she speaks gently with a sly grin, an intimate conversation of the heart. then the mood changes, the claws come out and she’s telling it like it is. diamond cut lyrics trade blows with spiky guitars and Hofer’s heavy grooves. Whether she’s inviting a lover to “take this, this is what I can give,” asking him “do you like it when I’m on my knees?” or accusing him of being a “little boy who’s lost his teeth, looking for his mama in the sheets,” Kelly never loses her poise. she’s passionate but never desperate, never forcing the emotion but just letting it flow, holding up a mirror or an image and letting it speak for itself. we believe her in “No Reason” when she says “I have no fear.” the shimmer and slide of See Red is highly addictive.
