here I am, sitting in front of my big ass cinema display, my window on the world, feeling dead inside. maybe I should smile and take a picture.
I’m staring a new year in the face (it only took me 5 weeks), a new computer recording system, a new music licensing business, and a new black lab album.
that is, a new black lab album that hasn’t begun to be born yet. not even impregnated. not even erect. just a conversation with Andy and we’re off to the races — except we’re not off yet. we’re just sitting around, fucking with our computers, waiting for inspiration to strike.
but it will strike. I’ve been here before. it always strikes. just going back thru some old demos got me a bit of a chubby. this month’s free mp3 of the month is sweet. I’d like to do something like this. but slower, darker, harder.
anyway, just wanted to say hi. hope you like ‘high up high.’ hope you’re well.
hey folks, as you may know, my side project with Deej Hofer has been working on a new collection of songs. after much delay (collaboration is like that…), Stray Palace’s the Diamond ep is up and ready for purchase at iTunes and AmazonMp3.
Stray Palace came about because Deej (and now our friend Alex Kemp) started making awesome instrumental tracks for me to sing over. these tracks became a place for me to do something different than what I do in black lab — that is, more straightforward (i.e., not work so damn hard on the lyrics), more positive (i.e., not so dark and pain-wracked all the damn time), and more cold wave (i.e., I get to sing like Bowie and the Ian’s Curtis & McCulloch, which is a lot of damn fun).
the result is, I think, also a lot of damn fun. it’s catchy and bright and yet dark in all the right places, modern and trendy with just the right touches of classic rock in there. anyway, I really hope you’ll dig it, that you’ll come to the Facebook and/or MySpace pages to let us know what you think, and that you’ll tell your friends.
we’re featuring one more Stray Palace track as the free Mp3 of the Month at blacklabworld.com, so stop by, grab “best there is” and let us know what you think.

meanwhile, thanks to everyone who found us through last week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars — welcome to the lab! the episode is up at itunes. our song “say goodbye” from Two Strangers comes on at around 29 minutes. it’s a pretty nice scene, actually.
ok, hope you’re all having a great summer. Andy and I are busy at work getting another treat put together for you all. hope to have it by christmas.
:: music video ::
I just finished the quickest, dirtiest and best no-budget hi-res music video ever, courtesy of camera/editing meister Scott Chestnut (check his extreme professionalness at scottchestnut.com). he said “come out and we’ll shoot” so that’s what I did. he got a whole mountain/beach boy/girl thing going which I really like, and the special effects make my pretend-guitar-soloing that much more overwhelming. awesome!
:: men at work ::
just so you know, we are hard at work on the fourth official black lab album. Andy and I spent a week in his studio last month cranking on some old ideas we’ve had kicking around and pulling out some new ones to chew on. we’ll toss them back and forth via ftp for awhile and they’ll start to take flight.
meanwhile, you can get in on the action via volume IV of the Mp3 of the Month Club. each month I’m sending out a new track that I/we are working on, letting people hear the process as it unfolds from demos to song selection to tracking. it’s been great to get people’s feedback on the forum and keep in touch between albums.
I’m hoping for a summer release of the long-awaited B-sides double CD and then maybe the new thing out fall/winter.
so, while working diligently on the new black lab joint, I couldn’t pass up the chance to collaborate with my old friend Deej on some trax he had started (he’s the same guy who played with me on the live duo cuts from the Ten Million Years album). they had a good kind of sweet sludge all over them that made me think of the music I actually put on these days when I’m driving. as usual, things got a little bit out of hand, and, after hearing them in my rental car, another friend of mine in LA gave us a little record deal (just a little digital distro to test the waters, nothing too soul-sucking). I was feeling tired of doing everything myself and took him up on it.
so here it is: five new songs boiled down into a wicked little EP, available exclusively at itunes, amazon mp3 and other fine digital outlets. five new songs by a band called Stray Palace. if I didn’t think you would like it I wouldn’t tell you about it. I really really think you’ll like it:

just in case you have room for one more little tiny shred of distraction in your life, you can follow me on twitter as I microblog my way through the writing of this next record. I’ll try to keep it pithy and non-pornographic, but the fact is that twitter begs to be abused.
