When I play house concerts for people who have supported my Kickstarters

When I play house concerts for people who have supported my Kickstarters, I’m always a little anxious. As a committed introvert, the prospect of hanging with and playing for people I know only a little or not at all provokes trepidation.

Which is why the incredible reception I receive, the warmth and hospitality and generosity, moves me all the more deeply. As I spend time in their homes, meet their families and hear about their lives, fans become lifelong friends.

In these amazing moments of connection, I realize why particular people gravitate to my music. There’s something ineffable we share that comes across, and it makes me feel deeply bound to everyone out there who listens to my songs.

I’m grateful to Pat and Renee for hosting me this weekend. It was a little surreal to come back to my hometown, to play for people I went to high school with and reconnect with old friends, but they made my landing easier than I thought possible.

Hearing about how Pat built his business, touring the old bank building he bought where both of us skateboarded as kids, meeting his daughter and her boyfriend, and watching Renee’s band perform in the city park bandshell (where I spent a thousand hours as a kid) — all made me feel close to my past and the place I came from.

I was so grateful for their generosity and it reminded me a lot of the generosity of everyone who has supported me to keep writing these songs and recording them. You might have spent six bucks on a download or thousands bringing me to your house to play — either way, you make my world go ‘round. Thank you, I love you.

PS, whether we went to high school together or not, I’m playing tonight at Visual Arts Collective in Boise and would love to see you. It’s free and starts at 6.
